New York State and the EPA spent $50,000* to prevent the spread of two new invasive species — the Asian clam and the spiny water flea — from spreading from Lake George to other waterways. The money is being used for inspections and power washing stations so boat owners can decontaminate their vessels before they are allowed into the lake. Several communities have also chipped in another $25,000* for a third portable power washer that can be used in different areas around the lake. The invasive species not only threaten the lake’s water quality, but also the region’s tourism industry.
